Huxley and mass media

A journey through Brave New World

Standardization of thinking

Publié par Aldous Huxley sur 10 Décembre 2012, 15:00pm

Having an opinion on something means having access to various different sources of information, in order to think about it, and form a judgment. In the past, not so long ago, there used to be a diversity of points of view and ideas in mass culture. But now, the conglomeration of media companies has led to the standardization of the cultural landscape, the same way the “House of Propaganda” has a hold on all media outlets in Brave New World’s society.

Evolution of the number of corporations controlling the majority of U.S. media

As we can see in the graph, the number of corporations controlling the majority of U.S. media has tremendously decreased, going from 50 to 5 in less than 20 years. This reduction implies limited quantity of viewpoints leading again, to a standardized and trained way of thinking on every aspect. Also, it means that a message can easily invade and take over all type of media to breed approval (just as we are supposed to die December 21st, 2012 according to the Mayas!). The U.S. culture being the most exported culture worldwide (movies, songs, etc), this matter affects everyone.

AOL Time Warner is one of the 5 leading companies and owns Time (a magazine), Warner Bros (a movie production), Atlantic (a music label) and HBO (a television network), to give just but a few examples. This clearly shows that this company is present on all fronts, being as influential as can be. And so are the other 4 corporations which all have the possibility to reach billions and therefore, have the power to generate in people’s minds a single and unified view of the world leading to the homogeny of human thoughts.
